Hot-desking

Hot-desking or non-territorial working involves a team or department having fewer desks than people. Members of staff are not allocated their own desk but use any available desk within their team area.

The benefits are:

  • Reduction of the space required by a team
  • Reduction in the amount of furniture required by a team
  • Increased flexible working
  • Improved internal communication
  • Part-time workers do not occupy a desk full-time
  • Reduced costs

The prospect of hot-desking is often greeted by staff with concern and resistance. It is important that this significant cultural change is planned carefully and in consultation with staff representatives. A WorkPlace consultant as an external person is often able to manage this process less controversially than one of your own managers. We also have experience of hot-desking in many organisations and of managing change sensitively.

Hot-desking may not be appropriate for all of your internal teams. We can help you to review this and to identify which teams it would suit.

Furniture and equipment are key aspects of successful hot-desking initiatives. We can advise on both and also work closely with your own IT and telecoms specialists on the critical technology side.
